Abija Blue is owned by Susan Carney. It is located in the Winchester Old Town Mall. It opened in May of 2013. The name Abija Blue was thought up by the youngest of her two sons. “It means bee in Quechua (a traditional language of the North Andes in Peru and Ecuador),” explained Carney.

“The inspiration for the name and our logo came from a beautiful neon cuckoo bee. It’s blue and lives in the North Andes and Ecuador, where we deliver several of our products.” She started by selling belt buckles at private schools, festivals, and horse shows.

Once her oldest son moved to Ecuador, she imported Panama Hats. “They were never made in Panama, only Ecuador. I started taking them to shows and then we added other South American products.” They also sell handcrafted belts, bags, baskets, toys, hats, and jewelry. Turkish towels and alpaca scarves are offered.

Abija Blue invites their customers to travel to different countries and interact with cultures. The store is referred to as “a gem of Northern Virginia” with unique items that customers can’t get anywhere else.
