Back to School!

Get ready, students, the first day of the 17-18 school year is tomorrow, August 16.

Here’s a quick checklist of some basic school supplies:

  • Backpack and/or lunchbox
  • Pencils and pens
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Planner
  • Binders
  • Notebooks
  • Zip drive
  • Completed summer assignment

But most of all, remember that this year will depend on you and what you do with it. As Gandalf says in the Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” We only have about nine months to grow as students. Use your time wisely–study hard and do your best.

Remember that we are also given this time to grow as people.

Freshmen, don’t be afraid. Make new friends and try new things. Respect your teachers, and they will respect you. Try out some clubs and go to Homecoming. It will be better than middle school, but don’t walk slowly in the middle of the hallways.

Sophomores, good job at your first year. Now it’s time to do it all again. Grow beyond what you thought you were capable of. Talk to your crush. Take time to think about the future, but don’t let it scare you. Don’t be afraid to take your time, go with the flow, and progress at your own rate.

Juniors, you’re almost there. Keep going. Go to Prom while you still can, whether it’s with friends or with a date. Go to a game and cheer for the Pioneers. Your future is around the corner but what’s more important is right in front of you. What you have ahead of you is not easy and there will be many decisions to make, but with a clear head and clear goals, anything is possible.

Seniors, you did it. Finish off your high school career right. Be a leader, be an example. Help the underclassmen. Make memories that will last forever. Be the best that you can be and you will be rewarded. But know that you do not just have nine months to become who you were meant to be. After high school–whether you go into college, military, or the workforce–you will always have a second chance. Think about who you have been and know who you are really meant to be. You’ll find your true self one day, and it will be worth it.

The BlueXpress believes in each and every one of you. Good luck!
