Cancer is a a collection of related diseases. It is disease that has abnormal blood cells dividing uncontrollably and destroying the body’s tissues. Symptoms of cancer can vary on the type and stage the cancer is at. Treatment methods, however, are universal because in most cases cancer patients have either radiation, chemotherapy and/or surgery. A common question is asked by many people is who exactly chooses the colors for the cancer ribbons. Although many people may think that American Cancer society and Choose Hope choose the colors, they do not. Usually the organizations that represent that cancer are the ones to assign a color to them to provide awareness, education and support.

From Friday, January 19 to Friday, January 26, Millbrook participated in Cancer Awareness week. Everyday students and faculty participate in various activities like wear certain colors on certain days, go to the carnival in the commons and the famous Go Pink basketball game.

Different days mean different types of cancer. Many students at Millbrook know what cancer is represented and what colors they are supposed to wear on specific days, but not many know what the over 100 different forms of cancer are.

On the first day of Cancer Awareness week, the school population wore orange to spread awareness for kidney cancer and leukemia. Kidney cancer, also known as renal cancer, is a disease where the kidney cells become cancerous leading them to form tumors that can grow quite large before they are found. But the good news is if the disease is found before it can spread to distant organs, it can be treated quite successfully. This type of cancer affects an estimated amount of 63,990 per year in the U.S.

Leukemia is a type of cancer that is found in blood tissues and bone marrow. There are many types of this cancer including acute lymphoblastic, acute myeloid, as well as chronic lymphocytic. This cancer is categorized as a rare type of cancer because there have been less than 200,000 cases per year in the U.S. Treatments are available but the type of treatment depends on the severity of it.

On Monday, January 22, the second day of Cancer Awareness week the school wore burgundy and white which represented neck and head cancers. Both of these cancers affect the mouth, sinuses, nose and throat. Neck and head cancer are so rare that there are less than 200,000 cases in the U.S per year. The treatment for both depend on the severity of the cancer.

Tuesday, January 23 the staff and students wore green for gallbladder, liver and lymphoma cancer. Gallbladder cancer is a type of cancer that affects the gallbladder, the small organ that is below the liver. This type of cancer is very rare and affect less than 20,000 people per year. The size and location of the gallbladder makes cancer easier to grow undetected. Just like other cancers, gallbladder cancer treatments will depend on the stage of cancer the patient is at.

Liver cancer, also called hepatic cancer, affects the football-sized organ that is located in the upper right area of the stomach. This type of cancer is rare and affects less than 200,000 people per year. Treatments vary of the stage but most can include removal or transplant of the liver.

Lymphoma cancer is a type of cancer that attacks the lymphatic system, the disease-fighting network in the body. The systems hold important organs like the spleen, the lymph nodes, thymus gland and bone marrow. Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are the two main types of lymphoma. This type of cancer affects less than 200,000 cases per year in the U.S. Treatment for this cancer will depend on the stage.

Wednesday, January 24 the school wore blue for colon, esophagus, prostate, and bladder cancers. Colon cancer affects the colon (rectum) that is located at the lower end  of the digestive tract. There is often no symptoms for this cancer so it is very hard to detect and the symptoms depend on size as well as location of this type of cancer. This type of cancer is sadly very common with more than 200,000 cases in U.S per year. Treatment for this type of cancer will depend on the stage.

Esophagus cancer is a type of cancer that attacks the esophagus, the tube that run from the throat to the stomach. This type of cancer is pretty rare in the U.S affecting less than 200,000 cases per year. Treatment for this type of cancer depends on the stage but for the most part the treatment for it focuses on the removal of the cancer through surgery.

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that is in a man’s prostate and the symptoms are very difficult to detect because sometimes there are no symptoms at all since this cancer tend to grow slowly over time. Just like colon cancer, this type of cancer is very sad because of how common it is, more than 3 million cases per year are in the U.S alone. Treatment of this type of cancer will also depend on the stage that the cancer is in.

Bladder cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the bladder and typically affects people who are older and usually is diagnosed early when it is still treatable. Since this type of cancer is more likely to reoccur, follow-up test are highly recommended. This type of cancer is rare, having less than 200,000 cases per year in the U.S. Treatments for this type of cancer depends on the stage of cancer.

For Thursday, January 25, students and staff wore their cancer awareness shirts to show cancer awareness of all the people who are going through cancer, have gone through it and the caretakers of them.

For the last day of Cancer Awareness week on Friday, January 26, the school’s population wore pink for breast cancer. This type of cancer is caused when the cells in the breast are growing out of control leading for tumors to form. What really is sad about this type of cancer is that it is very common leading to more that 200,000 cases per year in the U.S. Just like many of the other cancers the treatment depends of the severity of the disease. On January 26 was the Go Pink Basketball game that is a tribute to the cancer survivors.

Cancer is something that no one wants to get or someone they know to have. Over the years there have been many ways that people try to prevent cancer. Some of these prevention include having a healthier lifestyle, taking medicines and vaccines that help prevent cancer from developing, and avoiding exposure to cancer causing activities.
