On January 10, 2016, David Bowie passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after his fearless 18 month battle with cancer. David Bowie was known as the greatest musician icon of his time. His 26th album (Blackstar) was released on his 69th (January 8th) birthday, just two days before his death.
Tributes to him around the world had been paid to the incredible star. Sir Paul McCartney stated to the BBC that, “I treasure the moments we had together. He was a great star and played a very strong part in the British music history.” On Twitter, Bowie’s son Duncan Jones wrote “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be offline for a while. Love to all.”
Brian Eno said that David’s death came as a complete surprise, as did nearly everything else about him. “I feel a huge gap now.” Eno stated that Bowie had sent him an email a week ago and ended with, “Thank you for our good times, Brian. They will never rot.” Brian realized that he was saying goodbye.
The Rolling Stones declared that he (David Bowie) was an extraordinary artist and is a true original. Brian May described him as “a fearsome talent.”
Iggy Pop on twitter stated, “David’s friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person. He was the best there is.” Madonna said that she was truly devastated and that Bowie had changed her life and on Twitter she wrote, “Talented. Unique. Genius. Game Changer. The Man who Fell to Earth. Your Spirit Lives on Forever!”
Rapper Kanye West said, “David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime.” Ricky Gervais (comedian and actor) simply wrote: “I just lost a hero. RIP David Bowie.” Midge Ure addresses that, “He wasn’t just a brilliant songwriter and an amazing creator, he excelled at everything.”
