Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” is a special kind of novel. The kind that connects almost everybody who’s heard the name before. Whether it’s actual fans of the book, teachers assigning their classes to read it for homework, or the students who dreaded being forced to read it in school, it’s an important piece of literature. The book was Harper Lee’s only published work, apart from some articles scattered in magazines and newspapers.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” was published in 1960, and it carried a legacy along with it. Telling the tale of racial discrimination in Alabama through the eyes of a young girl in the 1930’s, it floored audiences. The novel received a film adaptation two years after its release, and it is considered one of the greatest films in American history.

It’s been roughly 55 years since TKAM was published. Harper Lee is 88 years old, and she’s almost completely blind and deaf; but that hasn’t stopped her from revealing the news of the decade to her fans. All over America, readers are getting their wishes granted with a sequel of TKAM being released. On July 14, 2015, “Go Set A Watchman” is set to be published.

The book features an adult Scout from the first novel, revisiting her hometown to see her father, Atticus Finch. Lee stated that many characters from TKAM will make appearances and that the book is set 20 years after the original story. However, the origins of this new story may be what shocks everyone the most. “Go Set A Watchman” was actually written and finished before “To Kill A Mockingbird,” but the idea of telling a tale centered around Scout’s flashbacks used in the original novel seemed like a better idea. So the book was scrapped, and a new one was written.

It was presumed lost, until 2014 when Harper Lee’s attorney and friend, Tonja Carter, found it with an original manuscript for TKAM. Lee stated, “I hadn’t realized it had survived, so I was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it. After much thought and hesitation, I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased to hear that they considered it worthy of publication. I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.”

Whether you’re a fan of the original book or not doesn’t matter because this is definitely big news in the world of literature. So mark your calendars and expect to hear more about Harper Lee’s new book as it gets closer to release.
