Harry Potter and The Cursed Child written by Jack Thorne and based on original works by Jack Thorne, John Tiffany and J. K. Rowling was an astonishing read that proved that Harry Potter is the book series that lived. With the original book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s (Sorcerer’s) Stone, published in 1997 and the seventh and final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, published in 2007, it’s been almost twenty years since the series came out and almost ten since the series ended. On opening weekend The Cursed Child  sold 2.7 million copies in the first 48 hours making it the fastest selling book since the Deathly Hallows (which currently holds the title for fastest selling book in history.)

The Cursed Child is not a novel and reading it is not the way it’s intended to be enjoyed; it is meant to be viewed on a stage and the audience is supposed to be captivated by the magical art of stage production. It is written in a script format but that doesn’t take away from the pleasure of getting to know the characters. The play is split in two parts (due to time) and is currently playing in London theaters. Tickets are being sold as low as $20 (for one part of the show and bad seats) but can be as high as $185 (for both parts together and great seats.)

Many people are asking if they plan to make The Cursed Child into a movie. While the answer to this question is still unknown, a popular opinion is that they shouldn’t. Why? Because that is not the intent. Yes, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child should be available to all but they should do it in a way that does not comprise the intent of the play. They should film a performance and release it on the big screen that way, so all can enjoy the wonders of the theater but still have access to the play. But until this happens, while some would argue otherwise, the book is still a great read to fill your Harry Potter needs.

The Cursed Child focus on the story of Ginny and  Harry’s son Albus struggling living up to the Potter name. After being placed in Slytherin he feels very out of place but he soon makes friends with Scorpius Malfoy who has some nasty rumors surrounding him. The main plot focuses on Albus trying to correct his father’s mistakes and rescue Cedric Diggory. How will they do this? There is a rumor that the Ministry has a powerful time turner that can take you back more than just a few hours. So what’s the harm in sneaking off the train and trying to find it?

The Cursed Child was not as good as the original Harry Potter series, but honestly what is? It is very rare that a book as good as Harry Potter  is written and to get a whole series of books that can take anyone’s breath away is a miracle. A book that good will not likely be written again in this lifetime because sadly, JK Rowling has stated that after Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them there will be no more Harry Potter books. Seriously? The original series focused on a Gryffindor, The Cursed Child on a Slytherin, and  Fantastic Beast will center around Newt Scamander a Hufflepuff. Where is my Ravenclaw story?

All in all if you are one of the people lucky enough to see The Cursed Child on stage enjoy it but until then, the rest of us Potterheads will sit comfortably, eat our chocolate, drink our butterbear, keep checking the mail while we wait for our seriously delayed Hogwarts letter and read a great after story to our favorite series.
