Hidden Treasure: Blue Plate Books

At 2257 Valley Avenue, there is a small business located behind the Dairy Queen known as Blue Plate Books. Blue Plate Books is a used bookstore that buys and sells used books in great condition. They buys books Tuesday through Saturday 11AM-5PM and they are open all week from 11AM-7PM. They can be contacted through phone at (540) 662-6657) or email at blueplatebooks@gmail.com. The employees are always helpful and kind and you are always greeted with a smile. Blue Plate Books is the perfect place for any book lover to buy books.

The owner, Pat Saine, opened his store September 2008. When asked about the troubles faced when opening the store, Saine said, “Bookstores thrive on the variety of their in-stock titles. When we first opened our doors, we had about 10 thousand books – a number of which were duplicates. People would come in looking for a particular title, and because of our lack of space, we just didn’t have that particular book in the store. We’ve increased our size twice now, and currently have over 50 thousand different titles in the store, so it is much easier to match our customer’s requests with a book we have in stock.”

The store that started as a small 1,200 square foot lease has now expanded twice totaling to 3,600 square feet. It is seven years old and very successful. Saine doesn’t know if the store will be expanding again or if he plans to open another store. “Who know what the future will bring,” said Saine.

Owning a bookstore is Saine’s second job. He was originally an ophthalmic photographer, meaning he photographed eyes. You can see some of his photography at www.pjsaine.com. Saine was inspired to open his store by a simple Gandhi quote, “Be the change you wish to see in others.”  “I thought that the world could use more used bookstores, so I opened one,” said Saine.
