Vanity Dies at 57

The singer who collaborated with Prince and was front for the group called Vanity 6 died at a hospital on Monday, February 15 in Fremont, California at the age of 57. She had battled kidney failure and abnormal illness for years. Her health had worsened in recent months leading up to her death. Around four months ago she launched a campaign called GoFundMe to help pay for her medical bills. Vanity was diagnosed with having sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (which causes blockage in the small bowel).

In her campaign she asked for $50,000, but got less than $7000. Denise Matthews (Vanity) reached the top of the Billboard’s dance chart and top 10 on the R&B chart. Before she was was a singer, she was a model and met Prince, who she later dated and collaborated with, backstage. There was a lot of controversy around her. Look here for more information about that:

Through the eighties and nineties she became an actor in movies and in TV shows. Midway through the nineties she became a born-again Christian after she overdosed on crack. She then wrote a memoir called “Blame It on Vanity” to tell everyone about her experiences. She also led her own ministries. Vanity stated last year in an interview with Rolling Stone that she had remorse for her wild ways and she had apologized.
