Volleyball is in full swing by this time of the school year. On Monday, September 11, our varsity and JV volleyball teams had a match against Riverside. The girls on the varsity team won 3-0, not needing the 5 matches that are scheduled. Tori Johnson had 13 kills and 4 aces, Abigail Koeller had 11 kills and Jordan Reid had 19 assists. “We played aggressively at the net and our defense was really great,” said Alexis Weir. Alexis is a senior this year and she’s been on the varsity volleyball team since she was a freshman. Their coach, Carla Milton, nominated her to be team captain. This means she will play all around instead of her normal position as middle hitter. The last time they played against Riverside they had a hard game. They had to play all five sets, but came out with a win in the end.

In addition to her leadership as team captain, Alexis Weir is the student of the month for Frederick County for the month of September. Her coach nominated her for the award and she found out when Coach Milton texted her to tell her the good news, “You were chosen for athlete of the month by FCPS. I’ll talk to you more about it this afternoon. Congrats!!!” This award is sponsored by Chick-fil-a and Alexis is hoping she’ll be able to get some free food out of it. “I don’t know what I get for the FCPS award. For the Green Turtle athlete of the month, I got a lot of food. It was about $75 worth of stuff and I also got a plaque. My name is also in their restaurant.” She has to be interviewed for each award, her Green Turtle interview is already over, but she’s still waiting for the Frederick County crew to come and talk to her.

“The team this year is really good at communication, which is necessary to be able to play this sport. It’s always been easy to bond with my teams, but this season it was really easy.” Her prediction for the year is hopeful. “If we keep improving the way we are then I don’t see an end in the near future. I think we could make it to states and win.
