YallFest: Where the Readers Go

Are you a booklover in need of some fresh air? Come to YallFest on November 11-12, 2016.

Located in Charleston, South Carolina, YallFest was founded in 2011 by the owner of local bookstore Blue Bicycle Books. The festival takes over much of lower Charleston, primarily on King Street, with several local businesses getting involved. The festival is open for two days and is free to the public. Only certain panels, such as the keynotes and YA Smackdown at the end of Saturday, charge admission in advance, however all but the closing keynote are sold out. But plans change for everybody, and sometimes you may find a festival-goer with an extra ticket.

The opening keynote is being held by best-selling authors Victoria Aveyard (the Red Queen Series) and Sabaa Tahir (the An Ember in the Ashes series). The closing keynote will feature best-selling authors Nicola Yoon (Everything, Everything; the Sun is Also a Star), Adam Silvera (More Happy Than Not), and Julie Murphy (Dumplin’). There will be signings for all 79 authors throughout Friday and Saturday.

Some of the featured panels that will take place throughout the weekend include “Violence as Genre,” “Middle Grade Storyball,” and “Unlikable Female Protagonists.” The three youtube stars attending are Christine Riccio (PolandBananasBooks), Kat O’Keefe (Katytastic), and Jesse George (JessetheReader). The three of them host an online book club called Booksplosion and will have a meetup on Saturday. There will be opportunities for attendees to win advanced reader copies or ARCs of yet to be released books, such as “Cupcakes & Competition! Presented by Riveted.”
